Otherwise, your site risks losing ground, and with it visibility, along with everything that comes with that (lost brand recognition, traffic, and sales).

To help you keep up, our SEO strategist Alexis Lesot looked into 8 trends worth following in SEO for 2023!

In this article, we only cover things that have changed or new developments on the way. That doesn’t mean the criteria we don’t mention here, such as local SEO, site performance, or internal linking, no longer matter today. Quite the opposite, they still matter just as much. It’s simply that none of that is new, and you’re probably already familiar with best practices on those fronts.

So, ready to discover the latest SEO trends for this year? Let’s dive in!

1. Artificial intelligence and automated writing

You’ve almost certainly heard about this one already, it’s THE big trend right now. First, let me go back to basics in case some of you missed it. OpenAI, a company specializing in artificial intelligence working alongside Microsoft, launched its fully AI-based conversation tool, ChatGPT, on November 30.

ChatGPT looks impressive, especially since it can produce decent quality articles, but it also raises real questions about the future. Here’s a partial list of what ChatGPT can do for us:

write articles that are nearly impossible to tell apart from something written by a human;

provide a list of keywords that fit your SEO strategy or your paid search campaigns;

list ideas for blog articles;

improve content you’ve written by changing its form;

improve content you’ve written by adding figures drawn from studies on the topic;

suggest an outline for your content;

give detailed answers to questions you ask it.

As you can tell, given how powerful AI has become and how much data it can draw from across the web, the question is whether the writing profession will still exist for much longer. Well, if you’re a writer, rest easy! You won’t be replaced by AI in 2023. Even though AI is turning into a valuable ally, it still has its limits.

For one thing, since AI pulls from the web, the information it gives you is sometimes wrong. Many tests have been run, and the takeaway is that the accuracy of what it produces can’t be guaranteed, even though it’s generally quite good. And no, AI isn’t (yet) perfect!

On top of that, since the content is written by a machine, it tends to lack emotion and may also fail to match the audience it’s meant for.

Also, because AI gathers its information from across the web, some of your content might end up duplicated. And if you know SEO, you know Google really dislikes duplicate content and rewards originality. What’s more, since AI relies on the web for its knowledge, conversation tools have limited awareness of recent events and most of the time won’t be able to answer questions about them.

Finally, Google is working to make its algorithm able to recognize AI-generated content. While it isn’t necessarily against the practice itself, creating content in order to manipulate search rankings is treated as a violation of the Mountain View company’s anti-spam policy. Using AI to help you write, yes. Flooding your site with content (through a blog, for example) just to boost your rankings, no.

To wrap up this long first point on SEO trends, ChatGPT’s popularity and its coming integration into Microsoft’s tools pushed Google to respond by announcing its own AI-based conversation tool, Google SGE. Built into search results, it will notably provide better answers to user questions directly within rich snippets:

This shift matters a lot, because right now, the data used in rich results to answer questions is pulled straight from websites. So it’s fair to wonder whether the famous position zero will still be around in the future.

On a related note, check out the article written by Adrien Renaudier, in which our web designer looks at how AI image generators are affecting design work!

2. EAT becomes EEAT

If you know a bit about SEO, you’re probably already familiar with EAT (Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness). This idea comes from Google’s official document laying out the guidelines that “quality raters” follow to evaluate the quality of search results.

If you’re not familiar with quality raters, they’re a group of people who, since 2005, have been tasked by Google with evaluating the quality of search results in order to improve the algorithm over the medium term.

Now back to EAT.

Expertise means that whoever writes a piece of content should, as the name suggests, have real knowledge of the topic covered. Note that content on sensitive subjects such as health, finances, and safety is most affected by this criterion (and thankfully so, given how much poor content gets written by so-called “experts”!).

Authoritativeness depends on Expertise, since you can’t build the former without the latter. In practice, this means that if your content is genuinely well made, other sites will link to it (creating what’s known as “backlinks”), making you a name people recognize in your field. In the end, it works the same way in real life: if you’re a doctor and several people speak well of you, their family and friends will likely want to use your services too.

The T for Trust means your site needs to include information that shows it can be trusted. A privacy policy, customer reviews, and secure payment options are examples of this. Transparency is what matters here!

The official guidelines document for quality raters gets updated regularly. And the latest version introduced a new criterion, Experience. So EAT has officially become EEAT. If you’re familiar with the digital world, you might assume Experience refers to user experience. Well, think again! This isn’t about UX, but about the writer’s own experience.

In practice, this criterion builds on Expertise. In concrete terms, your content needs to show that you actually have experience with the topic you’re covering. For example, if you’re reviewing a product, you need to show that you’ve genuinely tried it. Or if you’re writing about a travel destination, you need to have actually been there. That might sound obvious, but with the huge growth in blogs, many writers have no real experience with the topics they cover and simply write about them because Google “likes it.” No, Google doesn’t “like it.” Google likes quality, and it’s proving that once again with EEAT.

3. Link building and the fight against spam

You might say I promised not to rehash old news, and yet here I am tackling one of the most talked-about topics in SEO! And you’d be right… at least partly. This article gives backlinks a special mention because Google rolled out a new version of its link-related anti-spam algorithm, SpamBrain, this past December.

This isn’t the first time Google has gone after low quality links. The last update on the topic came out in July, and SpamBrain has been active since 2018. So far, nothing new… except that this time, the algorithm is said to be able to detect purchased links! And that changes quite a bit. If you’ve noticed your rankings drop early this year, it might be worth checking the quality of your inbound links.

According to Google, SpamBrain “can now detect both sites that buy links and sites used to pass along outbound links. Links obtained mainly to artificially manipulate search rankings are considered spam links. Our algorithms and manual actions work to cancel out these unnatural links at scale.”

Notice that Google talks about canceling out links, meaning their impact. Manual actions (visible in the dedicated tab in Search Console) are actually rare these days, so it’s not that your site gets manually penalized. It happens naturally, because certain links that used to help your SEO will simply stop having any effect. That should come as a relief to more than a few of you!

Still, as you’ve probably noticed, link building has become a real business. It’s very hard to get a good link without paying for it, even if you’re offering excellent content. And since paid links go against Google’s anti-spam rules, it’s fair to ask: is link building dead?

We all know link building is a core technique for improving your rankings, and it has a direct influence on EAT. And even though this criterion has become less weighty over the past few years, when two pieces of content are otherwise equal in quality, Google will still favor the one whose site has the stronger inbound link profile. Good inbound links will keep helping your site’s rankings going forward.

Rest assured, no, link building isn’t dead. But it’s changing, and for the better! In fact, when Google says it can identify sites used to pass along outbound links, it’s very likely talking about sites built purely for link building purposes, not specialized media outlets that charge you to publish an article with real added value and a link to your site. Once again, it comes down to quality.

In practical terms, the best approach is still to earn good links naturally by offering genuinely outstanding content. And if you’d rather keep paying for links, make sure you do it on sites that specialize in your industry and carry real authority, providing content that’s genuinely good and tied to what you do. Steer clear of general interest sites too. It’ll likely take more work, but it’ll save you from wasting time and money.

4. Google Lens and multimodal search

Have you heard of Google Lens before? Probably, given that the app has been around since 2018. For those who haven’t, it’s an image recognition technology built by Google, designed to show useful information about objects it identifies through visual analysis. The information you get comes from different Google search engines: Google Images, Google Maps, Google News, Google Shopping, and even Google Books. It’s worth understanding that Google isn’t limited to Search alone. Each of these search engines runs on its own set of algorithms.

Since April 2022, Google Lens has offered a new feature: multimodal search. This lets you combine image search with text search. For example, you can take a photo of your favorite dress, type in “red,” and get search results from Google Images and Google Shopping showing that dress in red. Or you could take a photo of your fridge, type in “maintenance,” and get Google Search results with blog articles on “how to take care of your fridge.”

Note that this feature also works with screenshots you’ve taken from the web, you don’t have to take the photo yourself. For more details, feel free to check the information Google has shared.

Thanks to machine learning and deep learning methods, Google Lens can “see” images the way humans do. The information pulled from a picture comes from a mix of different search engines, which improves its quality overall. According to Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, the goal is to make search feel more natural and intuitive.

With multimodal search paired with Google Lens’s ability to interpret images, image search is making a comeback, and some even say it could eventually overtake text search. Once often overlooked, images are now taking on a new role, especially in e-commerce. Having good quality images is no longer a nice extra, it’s now a real necessity!

5. Continuous scroll

You may have already noticed this while searching on mobile: scrolling has been continuous for a little over a year now. If you hadn’t noticed, here’s the deal: when you scroll through mobile search results, the list no longer stops after the iconic 10 blue links! No more need to click “page 2,” results 11 through 20 show up automatically as you keep scrolling. In fact, there’s no need to click “page 2, 3, 4” at all anymore, since mobile results now load continuously all the way through page 4.

And now, this feature is available on desktop in the United States, and, as usual, it should roll out everywhere else once testing wraps up. On desktop, users can see up to 6 pages of results by scrolling down before a “More” button appears to load additional results.

Continuous scroll is a major shift that should have real consequences for SEO. Beyond improving the user experience, this feature will naturally give more visibility to sites that don’t rank on the first page, especially since we’ve traditionally tended to avoid clicking “page 2” (or “page 3, 4,” and so on).

Continuous scroll will also affect ads, since some sponsored spots will disappear. To deal with this, Google has already said it plans to run more ads at the top of the page. Either way, this changes how search results appear, and it’ll be worth watching what happens next, both for SEO and for advertising.

6. Search with augmented reality – still being tested

Since late 2022, Google has been testing new augmented reality search features. If you need a quick refresher on augmented reality, here’s how the IBM defines it: “Augmented reality (AR) refers to the real-time integration of digital information into a user’s environment.”

Here are a few concrete examples of these new augmented reality search features:

Shoes

Ah, the joys of buying shoes online! Have you ever bought a pair of shoes online that looked perfect, only to realize once they arrived that they really weren’t your style? I certainly have, which is exactly why I prefer shopping in store.

Well, it may soon be possible (again, this feature is still being tested) to try on shoes using augmented reality. According to Google, people are 50% more likely to engage with an image when it’s shown in 3D rather than as a static photo. With this feature, you can rotate and zoom in on an image of a pair of shoes however you like, to get a better sense of the product. Google is also working on new technology to make it easier for businesses to create 3D images, so this feature can be rolled out more widely.

Furniture

Just like with shoes, it’s sometimes hard to picture how new furniture will look in your space. Here too, you’ll be able to view furniture from every angle. Even better, thanks to augmented reality, you’ll be able to see how a piece would look directly in your own space, using your phone’s camera. Yes, the future is here!

Google Maps

Google Maps now lets you view a city’s streets in real time. Arrows appear right on your phone screen, layered over the image of wherever you are, so you’ll know exactly which way to go to reach your destination. No more getting lost in the streets of New York or Los Angeles!

Along with directions, you’ll also be able to get information about the buildings around you (store name, user ratings, hours, price range, and so on). This is a good reminder that your Google Business Profile should be as complete as possible.

Unfortunately, as appealing as this feature sounds, it’s currently only available in 6 major cities: London, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, San Francisco, and Tokyo. We’ll have to wait a bit longer before we can view the streets of Joliette!

It’s still hard to say what kind of effect these features will have on SEO. Viewing shoes in 3D won’t tell you whether you’ll actually like them once they’re on your feet. Still, it should help you avoid a few unpleasant surprises! As for viewing furniture in your own space, and using augmented reality on Google Maps, those do seem like genuine steps forward. It remains to be seen whether the Maps feature will expand to more cities anytime soon.

7. Video – still being tested

Back in December, Google announced something new for video search. It’s still just being tested for now, but given how useful it could be, it may well become a permanent part of the search engine before long. It’s the ability to search for a specific moment in a video by typing in a text query.

Source : Google for India 2022: Using AI to make Google more helpful, secure, and private for India’s changing digital needs

It’s not exactly a revolution, but this new feature will still make life easier! No more fast forwarding through a video to find one specific piece of information. You type in keywords just as you would in Google Search, and you get your result right away.

This is made possible through voice recognition algorithms. And here’s a fun fact: this isn’t actually new at all. Back in 2008 (yes, really), Google introduced Google Audio Indexing (Gaudi), which offered the same kind of keyword based video search. But the tool was eventually dropped because voice recognition wasn’t very accurate at the time, leading to plenty of mistakes.

Will this attempt fare better? Given the quality of YouTube’s automatic captions, it’s fair to have some doubts.

8. Dynamic search filters – still being tested

Dynamic search filters, the kind we already know from Google Video, News, Shopping, and Images, will likely soon show up in Google Search as well. This feature has been in testing in the United States since December 2022.

These filters will let us dig deeper into searches on a given topic. For example, if you type “meal ideas,” several filters will appear just below the search bar, such as “+ easy,” “+ healthy,” “+ vegetarian.” These filters are dynamic and change depending on what you’ve already selected, working in a similar way to the “People also ask” box that shows up when you search for information.

Source : Zooming in on an easier way to explore on Search

You’ll also be able to see all available filters, listed at the end of the suggested ones.

There’s little doubt this feature will change how people search the web. The real question now is how much access we’ll have to filter related data, so we can actually put it to good use.

As you can see, 2023 is no exception! Once again this year, SEO strategies will need to keep pace with how fast things move online. No need to worry though, our search specialists stay on top of things at all times to keep refining how we work and apply the best practices in response to whatever Google and Bing roll out next.
